Ever since putting my Hoyas in the Ikea greenhouse

Ever since putting my Hoyas in the Ikea greenhouse cabinet, they've been growing like crazy because of the light: around 1000 FC near the top of the cabinet, which stays on for 12 hours a day. That's way more than my windows can provide: 200-400 FC most of the day and maybe one hour at 3000-5000 FC when there's direct sun.

My Hoya mathilde might be outgrowing its taco planter (it's a sponge holder for the kitchen sink).

A key skill of long term houseplant care: the ability to see past dying leaves and confidently trusting your environmental conditions and your care will yield new growth. You can't "fix" yellowing leaves or brown tips - older leaves die off as new ones grow.

Accept that your plants are always growing and changing.

Don't fall into the trap of believing you have total control in maintaining perfection.

Actually, I don't "see past" the dying leaves, I see and thank them for serving the plant over its lifespan. Each day, the leaves collected light and delivered carbohydrates to nourish the plant. When an older leaf yellows, I see it as decommissioning a solar panel; a retirement party where the send off message is: thank you for photosynthesis!

My long-term water plants (left to right, time in water):
Dracaena (Sansevieria) japonsea - 3 years
Dracaena torch-cane - 1 year
Golden pothos - 2 years
Begonia 'Lady Vanderwilt' - 3 years
Rhaphidophora tetrasperma - 3 years

Light: they lived in various locations where the indirect light levels were in the 100-200 FC range. They never received direct sun.

Water: kept adding new water as the levels diminished - this would usually be the same water I use for my potted plants, which means there's fertilizer mixed in. Occasionally, I changed the water if it got murky.

"Long-term water plants" sometimes means rooted in water and procrastinating to put in soil 🙃🌿

Why is the growth of new oxalis leaves so different from re-using the old soil vs using new soil?

It's not lack of nutrients because fertilizer was used on both pots.

I'll show you why in my stories! (Right after I give those oxalis bulbs some much needed new soil!)

These bulbs took about 2 weeks to re-grow - probably would have been shorter if I hadn't let them dry out so much. Sorry, Oxalis!
