Fiddle leaf fig browning at edges – House Plant Journal

Fiddle leaf fig browning at edges

Plant: Ficus lyrata (Fiddle leaf fig)

How long have you owned the plant? 1 to 2 years

Plant Parent

Browning at the edges of some of the leaves, started happening about a week ago.

The overall plant:

Light Situation:

Plant Parent: the plant sits by this window and receives about 2 hours of direct sun per day. Darryl’s Assessment: based on the info given and this image, I would say this plant gets indirect light in the 200-400 FC range and 2 hours direct sun.

How do you determine WHEN to water? I follow the schedule I was told/researched for this plant

Describe HOW you water: 2 cups of water every week

Fertilizer: I recently started using Miraclegro Houseplant Food

Soil Situation:

Darryl

Thank you for the photos and background information. Your plant looks quite healthy and the window is providing a sufficient view of the sky for this plant.

Assessment
The blemishes you see aren’t of major concern. Remember that all leaves have a limited lifespan – these are the oldest leaves and it should be expected that they will be first to display blemishes like this and eventually die off. There is no way to reverse the browned areas back to green.

New leaves will keep growing at the top of the plant while older leaves (lower ones) will keep dying off. That is the long term growth habit of this plant. That means, 2 or 3 years later, the top part with leaves might be past the height of the window, at which time you’ll want to prune the stem back to reset the plant.

Keep using the fertilizer on a regular basis. It will ensure the maximum number of leaves stays on the plant.

Sometimes mineral buildup can also accelerate dry brown edges so occasionally flushing the soil can help to leech off built up minerals. Do this by pouring water continuously through the soil so that water runs through the drainage holes – obviously you’ll need to do this in a sink or outside. Follow that up by watering with fertilizer since leeching also washes away nutrients from the soil.

Watering Method: while I usually suggest that watering should be done by thoroughly soaking every part of the soil and letting excess drain away, I understand the simplicity of “2 cups of water every week”.  You can keep doing this but I would add the soil flushing (mentioned above) once every 2 months so as to mitigate any uneven drying caused by partial watering.

Hope this helps!
