Concerns:
I just bought this plant last week and it came with its roots growing out of the pot. I’ve never had a plant do this so it’s definitely a foreign problem for me.

Monstera roots grow aggressively so it’s very common that after a few months, they’ll find their way outside of the pot. There’s nothing wrong with the plant but, in the near future, you will want to repot the plant into the next larger size pot. Standard potting mix will do.
In terms of determining WHEN to water, observe the soil and when it reaches about halfway dry, then (in terms of HOW to water), give it a thorough soaking and let excess water drain away.
If you want your plant to grow well in the long run, given that you have good light, you will want to use fertilizer – more info here.
